Hi, I have a question about the Hourglasses. The doubt arisen because the abilities given by Hourglasses seem too weak in my opinion.
If a monster takes more than 1 damage, does the deal have to stop when encountering a Hourglass?
For example, let's say a monster must take 3 damage: it takes the first, then it takes the second but on the second damage a Hourglass shows; does it have to take the third damage or the damage is stopped by the Hourglass showing?
If the Hourglass 'stop' damage it would be a stronger ability.

Hi Back. Love the handle... my favorite Dragonlance Saga character from the paragraph he was introduced...
You have questions about the Hourglass, eh? Let's see what I can do for you.

Firstly, this is going to depend on how this critter's taking the damage. If damage's from a Plot Twist (PT), and the language reads, "takes x damage", then there's no stopping it, just like for any other critter, they take the damage regardless if they have a defensive power that can prevent it, or not. If the Plot Twist (PT) reads, "is dealt x damage", provided they have a defensive power that can stop it (Stamina, Invulnerable). Dodge & Martial Artist have no effect, defensively.
If the damage is coming from a monster's attack, and the hourglass is on the Defense (Shield), then the opposing monster's attack is invalid, as you can't subtract x attack score from the value of hourglass.

Essentially, hourglasses are a liability but often they are paired with something cool like "Ghost", which can move you around the board, completely unhindered. If you're planningto slog it out, avoid monsters with hourglasses. On the flip sode, I've played armies where the theme was that I'd run in, scoop up as many vicitims as I could, then my monsters go *poof!*, and no one gets the points.

Heh yes, Raistlin did the same effect to me: his first description in the book was very 'powerful'
However my question was something different; probably my english does not help me (I'm italian). I mean, when a monster is taking 2 or more damages from an attack (or other sources), does the Hourglass symbol appearing on the dial stops the count or not?
I try a more specified example: Let's take The Fiend (starting dial values) and a Veteran Zombie Cop at his 4th dial.
The Fiend attacks the Zombie Cop succesfully and it deals 3 damage to it; now, because the Stamina ability, the damage is reduced by 1. I move the dial once (the 5th) for the first damage but it shows a Hourglass: does the Hourglass stops the damage here or I have to take the second damage normally, moving the dial again (on the 6th) ?
No problem. To your question: no, the hourglass doesn't stop... keep clicking and take the damage you cannot otherwise prevent. In your example, the Zombie Cop should be on click #6.

The hourglass is generally ment to be a bad thing. In zombies it kinda shows the slow sluggish brain power/movement etc. On other pieces it shows the fact that they are totally untouchable such as the mentioned ghost abilities. I personally have trouble running zombies because of it but i adore some of the others, like the ones that have hourglasses everywhere but movement and movement has ghost, Then the piece has a way to change it. One of the vampires does that and each time the hour glass clicks he gets faster, the moment he slays a victim he goes back to normal. basically he turns into mist.
